Set Design – The Lowry

The Lowry – set design and costumes. A production by the performance company Aqueous Humour; Set in a cutlery factory the work was a parody of the way people behave towards those who are perceived to be different, in this case focusing on disability.

The performers were from ‘Proud & Loud’, a group of disabled young people who engage with theatre/performance skills.

Charlotte Newson worked with ‘Aqueous Humour’ (Performance Company) to design the set and costumes for their Production “Forkin Hell” at The Lowry.

Manchester Pride

In 2008 it was the NHS (National Health Service) 40 year celebration of its birth. Charlotte Newson was commissioned to design the costumes and float for 100 participants in Manchester’s Pride Parade, working with the LGBT community.Charlotte Newson themed the float on a giant silver birthday cake and designed nurse/doctor costumes that reflected the different fashions from the 1940’s – 2008.

Wythenshawe Women’s Aid

Commission: to design posters and flyers for an outreach service to children affected by domestic violence.

Focusing on a specific age range and locality.

Input from families at the refuge, via drawings, informed the final design.

Manchester Pride “Frill of the Frock”

“Frill of the Frock” was a giant 6 metre high frock. Charlotte Newson designed the frock and the participant’s costumes with an Opera-Diva theme. The designs, final products and workshops took approx 8 months to complete.

On the day of the parade 80 – 100 participants from the LGBT community danced their way across Manchester as the ‘Frill of the Frock’ – with Company Fierce dancers and a big sound system.

Euro Pride “Six in Village”

Euro pride was held in Manchester in 2003, an international Gay Pride festival. As creative director for ‘Six in the Village’ Charlotte Newson was responsible for designing the OFFICIAL PRIDE PARADE entry. Themed on the freedom flag, participant’s costumes matched the flags colour sections. For example

Green – army (topical in terms of LGBT rights at that time)
Violet – lavender wedding theme
Red – Lips and cherries

The overall vision included a tank that fired flutter-fetti, a huge spikey inflatable created by the arts organisation ‘Space Cadets’ and giant round balloons.

Delinquents in Paradise

A 12 month project with 14 – 17 year olds: to develop writing and performance skills, including residential weekends working with the artists.

The final performances took place at Salford Quays, on board Walk the Plank’s Touring Theatre Ship.

‘Delinquents in Paradise’ asked what would happen if young people suddenly found themselves in Paradise.

Charlotte Newson’s role was to create set designs and props for ‘Paradise ‘ that were suitable for a Touring Theatre Ship and to engage the young people with this process.

“Unveiled”

“Unveiled” a six-month project working with young gay men and lesbians, exploring homophobia and bullying at school

Ickle Stories

‘ickle Stories’ was an eight-month project with 8 – 13 year olds based on ‘a day in their lives’ looking at their experiences at school, going shopping, crossing the road etc. Charlotte Newson encouraged participants to write stories that were developed into a script, to make costumes and props that grew into a set, to take photographs of the area to capture moments and streets that became an archive resource, and, finally, made a film with the young people performing their stories, in costumes and sets that they had worked on. The issues explored together were around health, safety and aspirations.

The project is available on video and also as a training aid within mentoring/training packages Charlotte Newson delivers to individuals and organisations.

Belfast ‘Beat Initiative’ & Salford City Council ‘Vision Arts’

A 12 month project offering young people an opportunity to engage in national and regional festivals: taking part in costume design, drumming and dance workshops and a residential weekend in Belfast with local young people.

The group paraded in fantastical, mythological costumes that lit up, accompanied by drummers and dancers: at “Making Light” in East Belfast & “Lighting the Legend” Salford.
