The original Emmeline Pankhurst portrait is based at The Pankhurst Centre, Manchester.

It has recently been visited by the cast of Ghost the Musical who very much enjoyed their time at The Pankhurst Centre and support the “Women Like You” project.

Charlotte Receiving Women’s Award – Congratulations!

Here we see Charlotte receiving her award for “Women in Art” at Manchester Town Hall 2011, presented by Dr Patricia Allmer Senior Research Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University - in recognition of her contribution to supporting women through the arts and her outstanding practice as an artist.

A Bouquet of Thoughts

‘A Bouquet of Thoughts’ Women Authors – Manchester Day Parade, Our Rickshaw being pedalled around the parade route with another 40 women walking, in paper costumes and hats. We were the only entry to be lead by 5 women on disablitiy scooters!!

Living Books and Handbags to go on UK Tour

It has been confirmed further to preliminary discussions, that the Oxfam Living Books and Handbags project that has been recently completed, will soon be on tour across the UK.

The artworks created to explore the impact of the public spending cuts on women, will visit Oxford first on the first leg of the journey and will be supported by Oxfam.

Yvette Cooper MP Visits Artwork Created by Charlotte Newson

Yvette Cooper, the Labour Shadow Home Secretary and MP for Pontefract and Castleford, visited the most recent installation created by Charlotte Newson.

The Oxfam “Living Books” project was showcased at The Place in Manchester for a charity dinner and had attracted the interest of Yvette Cooper who has a history of committment to issues related to gender inequalities.

Ms Cooper spent some time discussing the exhibition with Charlotte and the theme of the commission, namely the impact of the public spending cuts on women.

Charlotte facilitated a series of workshops for women at The Pankhurst Centre where they explored and expressed their feelings about this issue by the development of a variety of handbags which resulted in the Living Books and Handbags installation.

Charlotte would like to thank Ms Cooper and other supporters at the event including Councillor Suzanne Richards. (pictured together)

Oxfam Living Books Project Update

At the end of September, the “Living Books and Handbags” pieces were completed by all those that had been involved in the creative workshops led by Charlotte at the Pankhurst Centre.

Since this time, they have already been exhibited at the Women’s Awards at Manchester Town Hall.

They have also featured at the Labour Party Dinner in Manchester which was attended by Arlene McCarthy MEP and Yvette Cooper MP.

Charlotte is still in discussion with Oxfam as to taking the project on a country wide tour.

In all cases the project has been highly commended. Well done to Charlotte and all those women that were involved in this thought provoking activity over the last few months.

Charlotte Wins Women and Art Award at Manchester City Council Women’s Awards

Further to her nomination for the Manchester City Council Women’s Awards, it was confimed earlier this month that Charlotte was the winner of the “Women and Art” category award.

Charlotte was very happy to be honoured with this top prize and hugely enjoyed the award ceremony that was hosted at Manchester Town Hall.

In addition, both the portrait and the recently completed “Living Books and Handbags” project that was undertaken in conjunction with Oxfam, were exhibited at the event and were received very successfully.
